Acupuncture for Anxiety Disorders: A Comprehensive Approach
Anxiety is something we all experience, but when it becomes excessive, it...
We are all looking for solutions that work not only now, but also in the future, aren't we? Acupuncture, this ancient healing method, has gained a lot of attention and acceptance in modern medical practice. But many of our clients ask themselves, "Will the results last?" The answer is not only in the affirmative, but is supported by a growing body of scientific data.
Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles into specific points of the body, known as acupuncture points. Traditional Chinese medicine explains the effects of acupuncture through balancing the flow of energy (Qi) along the meridians, while Western medical explanations focus on neurobiological mechanisms, modification of the immune system and effects on the central nervous system.
At RedTree Centre, we apply the exclusive RedTree method that combines ancient wisdom with modern scientific understanding. This approach focuses not just on relieving symptoms but on achieving long-term, lasting results that can change the quality of life for our clients.
Do you always wonder if something you do today will help you tomorrow? We understand! Scientific research clearly shows that acupuncture has long-term benefits, especially for specific conditions.
A major meta-analysis of individual patient data published in 2018 presented convincing evidence for the persistent effects of acupuncture on chronic pain conditions. According to this study:
"Acupuncture has a clinically positive effect on chronic pain that is sustained over time. The effect of acupuncture cannot be explained by placebo effects alone."
The analysis found that the benefits of acupuncture for chronic pain decreased by only about 15% one year after treatment was completed, indicating a significant maintenance of therapeutic effects.
At Our centre, we see these long-term results every day in our clients experiencing chronic pain.
Do you have cervical pain and wonder if acupuncture will help in the long run? Good news! A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis found that acupuncture, particularly as an adjunctive treatment, provides post-treatment pain relief for at least three months for clients with chronic neck pain. Benefits in reducing functional impairment extended beyond three months, with improvements in Neck Pain Questionnaire (NPQ) scores at 3 months and Neck Disability Index (NDI) scores at 6 months meeting the minimal clinically significant difference.
Another meta-analysis of 32 randomized controlled trials with 1,562 participants established a dose-response J-scheme relationship between acupuncture treatment parameters and reduction in migraine frequency. The study found that the optimal regimen included:
The improvement in the frequency of attacks was sustained over the monitoring periods, demonstrating long-term benefits.

Acupuncture has proven both short and long term benefits for different types of back pain. For acute low back pain (ALBP), a cost-effectiveness analysis found that adding acupuncture to usual care produced a statistically significant incremental increase in quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) of 0.035 at one-year follow-up.
For chronic low back pain, studies have shown that acupuncture care was significantly more effective in reducing body pain than usual care at 24-month follow-up, indicating significant longevity of benefits.
At RedTree Centre, we specialize in treating chronic pain with acupuncture, offering long-term relief to clients who have tried many other treatments without success.
It is not only physical pain that can be improved in the long term with acupuncture. Mental problems are also helped, and we see this often with our clients.
A systematic review and meta-analysis of 20 randomized controlled trials found that acupuncture significantly reduced anxiety symptoms in clients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). The standardized mean effect size was 0.41 (95% CI 0.50 to 0.31, p<0.001) compared with control interventions. In addition, acupuncture showed fewer side effects and better tolerability than conventional treatments.
Although this review focused specifically on GAD, it suggests potential long-term applications for stress management. At RedTree, we offer specialized treatments for anxiety based on these principles.
Many of our clients report improved sleep quality that lasts long after the completion of acupuncture treatment. This secondary benefit often has a significant impact on overall quality of life.
As we explain in our article "The touch of a needle for a good night's sleep", acupuncture can help regulate sleep-wake cycles and reduce factors that often disrupt sleep, such as pain and anxiety.
Wondering how exactly acupuncture offers such long-lasting results? It's a reasonable question! The persistent benefits of acupuncture seem to result from multiple physiological mechanisms operating at different levels of the nervous system. Understanding these mechanisms helps explain why the effects of acupuncture can last beyond the immediate treatment period.
At the local level of needle insertion, acupuncture triggers:
These peripheral processes contribute to both immediate and lasting pain relief in the treatment areas.
Research has documented lasting changes in brain activity and connectivity after acupuncture treatment:
These central effects help explain the lasting benefits seen in conditions such as chronic pain and anxiety disorders.
Acupuncture regulates the body's immune response through:
This immune modulating effect may explain some of the long-term benefits of acupuncture for inflammatory conditions and chronic pain.
At RedTree, we also focus on strengthening the immune system through acupuncture, providing long-term benefits beyond the initial treatment.
The numbers and studies say their own thing, but what about real people? What do our customers say? While quantitative research establishes the statistical effectiveness of acupuncture, qualitative studies offer valuable insights into clients' subjective experiences, expectations and perceptions of long-term benefits.
Clients usually seek acupuncture when:
As one of our clients explained: "I was cynical, I didn't think it would work at all, I was just desperate to get rid of the pain." Now, six months after completing his sessions, he continues to enjoy significantly reduced pain and improved mobility.
Qualitative research has identified several consistent themes in clients' experiences with acupuncture treatment:
If you want to know more about what to expect at the your first appointment at RedTree, we have put together detailed information to prepare you.
Clients consistently report several long-term benefits from acupuncture treatment:
Often, a combination of treatments gives the best results, doesn't it? We think so too! At RedTree, we advocate a holistic approach to health and wellness. For optimal long-term results, we often combine acupuncture with other complementary therapies.
A particularly effective collaboration is the combination of acupuncture and homeopathy. These two healing approaches work synergistically, enhancing each other to provide results that last beyond the initial sessions.
As we explain in our article on the synergy of homeopathy and acupuncture, this combination is particularly beneficial for conditions such as chronic pain conditions, allergies, sleep disorders and stress-related conditions.
At Red Tree, we believe that the long-term benefits of acupuncture are further enhanced when integrated into a holistic approach to health. This may include:

The duration of the effects of acupuncture varies depending on the condition being treated and the individual response. For chronic pain conditions, studies show that benefits can be sustained for 12-24 months after treatment is completed, with only about a 15% decrease in outcome after one year.
Research evidence suggests that optimal long-term results are usually achieved with a series of 12-16 sessions at a frequency of 2-3 times per week, for a total treatment duration of 1.5-2 months. However, this is individualized based on the specific needs of the client.
While many clients report a significant reduction in their need for medications after acupuncture treatment, it is important to always discuss medication changes with your primary healthcare provider. Acupuncture often works best as part of an integrated approach to health care.
