The Long Term Benefits of Acupuncture: Scientific Data and Client Experiences

Key points:

  • Acupuncture offers clinically significant benefits that are sustained over the long term, particularly for chronic pain
  • Scientific studies show that the benefits of acupuncture are maintained up to 24 months after treatment
  • For chronic pain, benefits are only reduced by 15% one year after treatment is completed
  • Acupuncture is particularly effective for neck pain, migraines, chronic back pain and anxiety disorders
  • The optimal treatment regimen includes 12-16 sessions with a frequency of 2-3 sessions per week

Introduction to the long-term benefits of acupuncture

We are all looking for solutions that work not only now, but also in the future, aren't we? Acupuncture, this ancient healing method, has gained a lot of attention and acceptance in modern medical practice. But many of our clients ask themselves, "Will the results last?" The answer is not only in the affirmative, but is supported by a growing body of scientific data.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles into specific points of the body, known as acupuncture points. Traditional Chinese medicine explains the effects of acupuncture through balancing the flow of energy (Qi) along the meridians, while Western medical explanations focus on neurobiological mechanisms, modification of the immune system and effects on the central nervous system.

At RedTree Centre, we apply the exclusive RedTree method that combines ancient wisdom with modern scientific understanding. This approach focuses not just on relieving symptoms but on achieving long-term, lasting results that can change the quality of life for our clients.

Scientific data on long-term effectiveness

Do you always wonder if something you do today will help you tomorrow? We understand! Scientific research clearly shows that acupuncture has long-term benefits, especially for specific conditions.

Chronic pain conditions

A major meta-analysis of individual patient data published in 2018 presented convincing evidence for the persistent effects of acupuncture on chronic pain conditions. According to this study:

"Acupuncture has a clinically positive effect on chronic pain that is sustained over time. The effect of acupuncture cannot be explained by placebo effects alone."

The analysis found that the benefits of acupuncture for chronic pain decreased by only about 15% one year after treatment was completed, indicating a significant maintenance of therapeutic effects.

At Our centre, we see these long-term results every day in our clients experiencing chronic pain.

Pain in the neck

Do you have cervical pain and wonder if acupuncture will help in the long run? Good news! A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis found that acupuncture, particularly as an adjunctive treatment, provides post-treatment pain relief for at least three months for clients with chronic neck pain. Benefits in reducing functional impairment extended beyond three months, with improvements in Neck Pain Questionnaire (NPQ) scores at 3 months and Neck Disability Index (NDI) scores at 6 months meeting the minimal clinically significant difference.

Migraines

Another meta-analysis of 32 randomized controlled trials with 1,562 participants established a dose-response J-scheme relationship between acupuncture treatment parameters and reduction in migraine frequency. The study found that the optimal regimen included:

  • 16 acupuncture sessions
  • With a frequency of 3 sessions per week
  • For a treatment duration of 1.5 to 2 months

The improvement in the frequency of attacks was sustained over the monitoring periods, demonstrating long-term benefits.

Pain in the back

Acupuncture has proven both short and long term benefits for different types of back pain. For acute low back pain (ALBP), a cost-effectiveness analysis found that adding acupuncture to usual care produced a statistically significant incremental increase in quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) of 0.035 at one-year follow-up.

For chronic low back pain, studies have shown that acupuncture care was significantly more effective in reducing body pain than usual care at 24-month follow-up, indicating significant longevity of benefits.

At RedTree Centre, we specialize in treating chronic pain with acupuncture, offering long-term relief to clients who have tried many other treatments without success.

Long-term mental health benefits

It is not only physical pain that can be improved in the long term with acupuncture. Mental problems are also helped, and we see this often with our clients.

Anxiety disorders

A systematic review and meta-analysis of 20 randomized controlled trials found that acupuncture significantly reduced anxiety symptoms in clients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). The standardized mean effect size was 0.41 (95% CI 0.50 to 0.31, p<0.001) compared with control interventions. In addition, acupuncture showed fewer side effects and better tolerability than conventional treatments.

Although this review focused specifically on GAD, it suggests potential long-term applications for stress management. At RedTree, we offer specialized treatments for anxiety based on these principles.

Sleep quality

Many of our clients report improved sleep quality that lasts long after the completion of acupuncture treatment. This secondary benefit often has a significant impact on overall quality of life.

As we explain in our article "The touch of a needle for a good night's sleep", acupuncture can help regulate sleep-wake cycles and reduce factors that often disrupt sleep, such as pain and anxiety.

Mechanisms of action for long-term results

Wondering how exactly acupuncture offers such long-lasting results? It's a reasonable question! The persistent benefits of acupuncture seem to result from multiple physiological mechanisms operating at different levels of the nervous system. Understanding these mechanisms helps explain why the effects of acupuncture can last beyond the immediate treatment period.

Peripheral mechanisms

At the local level of needle insertion, acupuncture triggers:

  • Release of neuropeptides (e.g., CGRP, substance P)
  • Improvement of local blood flow through vasodilation
  • Promotion of tissue healing
  • Release of ATP, which is converted to adenosine (activating A1 receptors with analgesic effects)

These peripheral processes contribute to both immediate and lasting pain relief in the treatment areas.

Effects on the central nervous system

Research has documented lasting changes in brain activity and connectivity after acupuncture treatment:

  • Setting the default mode network and the frontal network
  • Anti-stress effects through regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis
  • Reduction of excitability in areas of the brain associated with pain
  • Changes in functional connectivity maintained beyond treatment sessions

These central effects help explain the lasting benefits seen in conditions such as chronic pain and anxiety disorders.

Regulation of the immune system

Acupuncture regulates the body's immune response through:

  • Inhibition of glial cell activation
  • Regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines
  • Reduction of systemic inflammation markers

This immune modulating effect may explain some of the long-term benefits of acupuncture for inflammatory conditions and chronic pain.

At RedTree, we also focus on strengthening the immune system through acupuncture, providing long-term benefits beyond the initial treatment.

Customer experiences with long-term benefits

The numbers and studies say their own thing, but what about real people? What do our customers say? While quantitative research establishes the statistical effectiveness of acupuncture, qualitative studies offer valuable insights into clients' subjective experiences, expectations and perceptions of long-term benefits.

Expectations and experiences

Clients usually seek acupuncture when:

  • Conventional treatments have failed or caused intolerable side effects
  • They want a more natural approach to managing their condition
  • Receive positive recommendations from trusted social contacts
  • Feeling neglected by conventional medical approaches

As one of our clients explained: "I was cynical, I didn't think it would work at all, I was just desperate to get rid of the pain." Now, six months after completing his sessions, he continues to enjoy significantly reduced pain and improved mobility.

Themes of experiences during treatment

Qualitative research has identified several consistent themes in clients' experiences with acupuncture treatment:

  • Initial prejudices and concerns: Many clients approach acupuncture with concerns about pain or discomfort. One client was waiting: "someone to stick needles all over me. I thought it would be very painful."
  • During treatment - relaxation and calmness: Despite initial concerns, many clients describe the actual experience as deeply relaxing. One client reported: "I feel relaxed. I get away. I start to float. Then, when they remove the needles, I'm a whole new person."
  • After treatment - mind-body effects: Clients often report benefits beyond the chief complaint, including improved sleep, reduced stress and better mood.

If you want to know more about what to expect at the your first appointment at RedTree, we have put together detailed information to prepare you.

Long-term benefits often cited

Clients consistently report several long-term benefits from acupuncture treatment:

  • Reduction of pain: Many experience continued pain relief weeks or months after the end of treatment.
  • Relaxation and stress reduction: The profound relaxing effect is often reported to be sustained beyond treatment sessions.
  • Improved sleep quality: Better sleep is usually referred to as a secondary benefit that continues in the long term.
  • Self-care tools: Clients report learning self-care techniques during acupuncture treatment that they continue to use, such as identifying pressure points for migraine relief or using self-massage techniques.
  • Reduced use of medicines: Many clients report reduced dependence on painkillers, with one study finding a 44.5% reduction in painkiller use maintained for sixteen weeks.

Combining acupuncture with other treatments for long-term results

Often, a combination of treatments gives the best results, doesn't it? We think so too! At RedTree, we advocate a holistic approach to health and wellness. For optimal long-term results, we often combine acupuncture with other complementary therapies.

Homeopathy and acupuncture

A particularly effective collaboration is the combination of acupuncture and homeopathy. These two healing approaches work synergistically, enhancing each other to provide results that last beyond the initial sessions.

As we explain in our article on the synergy of homeopathy and acupuncture, this combination is particularly beneficial for conditions such as chronic pain conditions, allergies, sleep disorders and stress-related conditions.

Holistic approach for long-term benefits

At Red Tree, we believe that the long-term benefits of acupuncture are further enhanced when integrated into a holistic approach to health. This may include:

  • Individualized treatment plans that take into account unique needs and goals
  • Nutritional advice to support general health and the healing process
  • Stress management techniques that enhance the benefits of acupuncture
  • Exercises and lifestyle recommendations that can be implemented at home

Frequently asked questions about the long-term benefits of acupuncture

How long do the effects of acupuncture last?

The duration of the effects of acupuncture varies depending on the condition being treated and the individual response. For chronic pain conditions, studies show that benefits can be sustained for 12-24 months after treatment is completed, with only about a 15% decrease in outcome after one year.

How many acupuncture sessions are needed for long-term results?

Research evidence suggests that optimal long-term results are usually achieved with a series of 12-16 sessions at a frequency of 2-3 times per week, for a total treatment duration of 1.5-2 months. However, this is individualized based on the specific needs of the client.

Can acupuncture replace drugs in the long term?

While many clients report a significant reduction in their need for medications after acupuncture treatment, it is important to always discuss medication changes with your primary healthcare provider. Acupuncture often works best as part of an integrated approach to health care.

How can I maintain the benefits of acupuncture in the long term?

To maximize and maintain the long-term benefits of acupuncture, we recommend:

  • Completion of the recommended full treatment cycle
  • Carry out periodic "maintenance" sessions as recommended by your professional
  • Adopting complementary self-care practices such as regular exercise, stress management and good sleep habits
  • Consideration of combined therapeutic approaches, such as homeopathy or other complementary therapies that we offer at RedTree
