Traditional Chinese medicine, from which acupuncture originates, often addresses insomnia as a symptom of an underlying imbalance in the body, such as yin-yang imbalance or Qi disruption. There are some studies that suggest acupuncture can be beneficial for insomnia:
  • A meta-analysis published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine reviewed eight randomized controlled trials involving 587 participants and found that acupuncture was associated with a significant improvement in sleep quality compared to sham acupuncture or no treatment.
  • A study published in the Journal of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences found that acupuncture significantly reduced sleep disturbances in patients with depression and insomnia.
  • A review published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine examined 46 studies involving over 3,800 participants and found that acupuncture was associated with a significant improvement in sleep quality compared to no treatment.
However, more research is needed to fully understand the effects of acupuncture on insomnia.
Sleep is a part of the natural interplay of yin and yang in the body.
  • Yang energy is dominant when we are awake and active: fuels the body’s activities and keeps us warm and alert.
  • Yin energy rules sleep (cooling, quiet and nourishing character): it helps to slow down the body’s activities, so that it is relaxed and calm for a good night’s sleep.
When this natural rhythm is disrupted, there is an imbalance of yin and yang qi, which results in insomnia.
Rebalancing acupuncture treatment is a term that is commonly used to describe the process of restoring balance or harmony to the body's energy pathways, or meridians, through the use of acupuncture. During a rebalancing acupuncture treatment, the acupuncturist will first assess the client’s overall health and well-being, as well as any specific concerns or symptoms they may be experiencing. Based on this assessment, the acupuncturist will then select a combination of acupuncture points to target in order to rebalance the body's energy and promote healing. The treatment itself involves the insertion of very thin needles into specific points on the body, which are thought to correspond to different organs and systems in the body. The needles are left in place for a period of time, typically between 15 and 30 minutes. During this time the acupuncturist might use the moxibustion technique to enhance the treatment. Moxibustion involves the burning of dried mugwort near the skin to stimulate specific acupuncture points. Overall, the goal of rebalancing acupuncture treatment is to restore harmony and balance to the body's energy pathways, which can help to alleviate a variety of health issues and promote overall well-being and relaxation.
